biography

Rebekah Tatiana Wolfe (born February 5, 1986) is an American actress. Wolfe is the daughter of filmmaker Elias Wolfe and his third wife, actress Lilian Wolfe. She is best known for her roles in The Town (2010), The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011), Carol (2015), and Christine (2016).

Early Life Wolfe was born and raised in Beverly Hills, California. Wolfe's father is Elias Wolfe, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, and her mother is Lilian Wolfe, an acclaimed actress. Elias famously left his second wife, artist and filmmaker Adelaide Wolfe, for Lilian in 1981 after the pair worked on a film together. She is the middle of four siblings: she has an older sister, Evelyn, a younger sister, Maeve, and a younger brother, Wesley. She also has four half-siblings from her father's first two marriages.

Wolfe attended the Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, California, where she participated in the cheerleading and dance programs. She was presented as a debutante at the Bal des débutantes in Paris in 2004. She went on to attend the University of Southern California, graduating in 2007 with a dual degree in psychology and sociology. She stated in an interview with Elle in 2009 that she "had really lofty aspirations of pursuing my doctorate and being a psychologist - mental illnesses fascinate me, and I wanted to be able to help people through theirs. Maybe I'll get back to it, some day, but after Running with Scissors, I just couldn't fathom doing anything besides acting."

career Wolfe made her film debut in 2006's Running with Scissors, referring to the role as "mostly an accident", and "something I wanted to try just to see if I was any good at it". She has maintained that she never wanted to be an actress growing up, and that her parents would have actually preferred it if she had gone into a more 'normal' field. She appeared in the musical romance Across the Universe in 2007, the romantic comedy-drama Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008, and two supporting roles in 2009 - her first notable role did not come until she appeared in the Ben Affleck directed The Town (2010), appearing alongside Jon Hamm, Rebecca Hall, and Jeremy Renner.

Her biggest break, however, came in 2011 when she starred alongside Daniel Craig in David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, playing computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. Wolfe won the role over several other actresses after two and a half months of auditions and screen tests, which she later described as "excrutiating. David is so detail-oriented, so focused on getting everything exactly right, that I swear I read him the same six lines of dialogue thirty different times. I felt like I was going to pull my hair out, near the end, just shout at him to make a damn decision already, and that's when he called - that's when he told me I'd won it. I almost didn't take it, purely out of spite". She opted to wear a wig for the short, black crop required for the role, but went through with bleaching her eyebrows and the majority of the body piercings required for the role; she had each of her ears pierced four times, as well as her eyebrow and right nipple. Only her nose and lip piercings were fake. Wolfe received universal critical acclaim and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award and Academy Award for Best Actress. Though proud of the performance, Wolfe has described the experience as "wholly draining; Lisbeth is such a complex character with such a gritty history, I found it difficult to come back from. I had nightmares throughout the duration of filming, and even for a few months after. As much as I loved the role, I could barely watch myself in it."

Wolfe credited Lisbeth Salander as the character that made her realize what sort of characters she wanted to play - complex, driven women that were written to be more than just the 'girlfriend' or 'wife'. She appeared in Walter Salles' adventure drama On the Road in 2012 (though many noted this role seemed directly at odds with her desire to appear as more than a love interest for a main character), and her first David Lowery-Casey Affleck collaboration in 2013, when she starred in Ain't Them Bodies Saints. She also appeared alongside Bradley Cooper in Clint Eastwood's biographical drama American Sniper (2014).

She saw further critical success in 2015, appearing alongside Cate Blanchett in Todd Haynes' romantic drama Carol. Set in 1950s New York City, it tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aspiring photographer (Wolfe) and an older woman in the midst of a divorce (Blanchett). The film had its premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where Wolfe tied for the Best Actress award for her role. She was also nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance. The film saw some controversy when it was omitted from the Best Picture and Best Director categories, with many critics criticizing the Academy's inclusion of women- and LGBTQ-centric films. Wolfe stated that she felt her nomination was "more upsetting than exciting, given Todd's clear snub. I would not have been able to give the performance I did without him, and to see him unrewarded for the beautiful he work he did is absolutely terrible."

She went on to appear in Terrence Malick's experimental drama Knight of Cups (2015), as well as biographical drama Christine (2016), a role that was hailed by most as the "absolute best of her career." She reunited with Ben Affleck for his poorly received crime drama Live By Night (2016), and with Casey Affleck for their second Lowery collaboration, A Ghost Story (2017). Along with the latter, she has two films set for release in 2017: Kate and Laura Mulleavy-directed drama Woodshock and Garth Davis-directed drama Mary Magdalene.

She has a trademark working relationship with director David Lowery. However, reports persist that the pair do not actually get along, and she continues to be cast in his projects purely at Casey Affleck's request. She's similarly a frequent collaborator of his brother Ben Affleck.

Personal Life Though she has rarely publicly acknowledged it, Wolfe struggles heavily with drug addiction (both prescription and illegal). She has been admitted to Cirque Lodge three times and Crossroads twice, but has only completed a full drug treatment program once (in late 2012, treated for oxycodone and cocaine addiction). The media frequently runs stories concerning her drug use, the most recent being a TMZ story that ran in 2016 and appeared to show Instagram pictures of Wolfe taking cocaine at a Los Angeles nightclub.

She currently lives primarily in Calabasas, California, in a five-bedroom home she purchased in 2009. She also owns a three-bedroom apartment in Manhattan, New York.

relationships Wolfe was married to fellow actor James Raisbeck from 2004 to 2009 after meeting at Harvard-Westlake in 2003. She was subsequently married to fellow actor Sawyer Dunlow for five months in 2010, having eloped in Paris after only dating for a few weeks. Her third marriage was to filmmaker Adam Turner (b. July 9, 1972) from 2012 to 2015.

media perception Wolfe is generally seen as a 'bad influence' in the media, plagued with drug and cheating scandals since the beginning of her career, and there are a handful of actors and directors that will not work with her. She continues to be cast in projects, however, thanks to a mix of nepotism and genuinely hard work - she has been rumored to be 'difficult' on set, but she's nonetheless developed an incredibly dedicated work ethic. Rumors persist that she frequently sleeps with directors and producers in order to secure her roles, but most critics find them generally unfounded and easily ignored.

She's known for her strong performances, but for every critically acclaimed film she tends to also have a flop (i.e. Blood Ties, Knight of Cups, Live By Night); she says she chooses projects based on the depth of script, not the chance for accolades, and generally finds she enjoys the more underwhelming films better than the others.

She has faced considerable backlash from feminist groups for her close friendship with Casey Affleck, who she consistently defended when his sexual harrassment allegations were brought to light during the 2017 awards season. Critics are quick to overlook this, however, noting that her strongest performances typically come alongside Affleck.

notable public events In February 2017, Rebekah faced considerable backlash from multiple outlets after publicly defending Casey Affleck in the wake of his sexual harrassment allegations, brought to the forefront of awards season. She was called a "discredit to her gender" and a "betrayer of sexually abused women everywhere", among other things. She has continued to defend him in spite of this.

On March 2nd, 2016, William Wyatt, an ex-journalist, was taken to court on stalking charges, with claims brought forward that he has been stalking Rebekah on-and-off since 2013. He eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to jail time.

On November 9th, 2012, Rebekah checked quietly into a rehabilitation facility in Utah (for the third time). Unlike the first two attempts, however, she successfully completes a drug treatment program for addiction to cocaine and oxycodone. News of her relapse breaks only a few months later.

rebekah is most widely known for her range, capable of delivering acclaimed performances in both period and modern dramas, as well as various genres. she has become something of a critical darling in spite of her personal struggles, with critics noting that her incredibly selective filmography appears to be a calculated move on her part to cultivate a filmography of collaborations with respected directors and actors.

she is additionally well-known for her frequent collaborations with fellow actors casey affleck and ben affleck, with many critics pointing out that her best performances typically come alongside affleck.

rebekah has gained a reputation for being something of a wildcard, both in interviews and walking red carpets. some find her blunt personality refreshing, while others think she is too off-putting to be likeable. she is known for molding her personality to the interviewer; if she enjoys them, she is more likely to open up, whereas if she dislikes them, she rarely elaborates on any question posed to her. she is typically thrust into the middle of drug scandals, much to her publicist's dismay, with many branding her a 'bad influence.'
